Mystery Science Theater 3000-Beware of Snakes!

        For those of you not familiar with Mystery Science Theater 3000 (affectionately known as MST3K), it is a show that started in the early 90's and as of 2016 has been rebooted by Netflix.  While over the years the main character has changed, the format of the show has generally been the same.  The current protagonist, Jonah, is some poor schmuck who has been trapped in outer space by evil scientist who want to test his brain by subjecting him to horrible movies.  With only his robot friends Crow, Tom Servo and Gypsy, Jonah takes to tearing the movies a verbal new one.  

        This is no regular review however, this is a review of a live performance; MST3K Beware of Snakes tour!  The live performance was set in the same format as each episode, with the added benefit of being particular to the area as well as having some good audience interaction.  The movie played for this performance is an Italian movie from 1967 called, "Argoman: The Fantastic Superman."  Doing further research this movie may also bear the title, "The Incredible Paris Incident."  
     This film is exactly what it sounds like: a horrible movie styled after Superman.  I'll leave my own critique of this movie out, as what I intend to review is the work of the folks from MST3K.  I found this performance to be the best MST3K riffing I have seen yet.  The jokes are on point and hilarious throughout.  Sometimes I find myself at a loss to some of the references made in the riffing, but I was able to get most of them in this instance.  I found the pacing of the jokes especially great because while viewing at home I often have to stop and go back because I couldn't hear the dialogue over my own laughter, but there were appropriate pauses throughout the show.  What really made going out to see a performance worthwhile over the comfortable at-home experience was the way the crowd was interacted with and also how fresh the jokes were, which was evident as occasionally even Jonah couldn't stop laughing.  

         Overall, my experience as an MST3K fan was enthralling.  This is a must-see event for any fan, and even a great way to introduce future fans to the show.  Though pricey for those who wish to go out, hopefully the live recording will be available for future purchase.  
                                My overall rating of the show is 4 out of five stars!🌟🌟🌟🌟✰

The Killing of a Sacred Deer.

  The Killing of a Sacred Deer   is a thriller that centers around a cardiac surgeon named Steven Murphy (Colin Farrell) and his family. Very early on, we are introduced to a young boy named Martin (Barry Keoghan) who Steven has taken under his wing.  Martin is very strange in some way, but Steven's life seems to be going well as a surgeon, and also as a family man.  He is happily married to an Ophthalmologist named Anna (Nicole Kidman) and has a 15 year old daughter and a 12(?) year old son.  Life seems well here, on paper, but from the very beginning something is not right about anything.  This film does an amazing job of creating a sense of unease throughout, which builds the suspense.  There is a large amount of silence surrounding the scenes, as if we are to look at whats not being said more so than what is.  The music is discordant and eerie, and the shots leave so many questions for an astute audience member.  There are a few shots in particular where the center of the

The 'Burbs.

In a previous post, I made note of the fact that every film I view is first subjected to a quick IMDB  review.  That includes thumbing through several of the user and critic reviews as well as a quick meta-score check.  While The 'Burbs has a decent 6.9 IMDB rating, the reviews lean towards a less than favorable opinion. Ultimately, I chose to watch The 'Burbs  for one reason: Tom Hanks.  I love Tom Hanks.  I also have been falling more in love with the whole 80's genre.  While I firmly believe that the 90's was our golden age of cinema (before everything became "realistic" and CGI ruined most aspects of photography in action flicks), the 80's was clearly the adolescence of modern film; a time in which trial and error was the preferred method of producing films!
