Deadpool 2.

Deadpool 2 is the highly anticipated sequel of Marvel's most offensive movie to date!  For those of you who haven't seen Deadpool and are Marvel fans over the age of 17, the first Deadpool is cannon!  Drop your plans and make sure you're up to date on the first film, because it is everything we want in a dark hero and a great film overall.  Also, though you may not entirely need to see the first movie to follow the sequel, you should see the first movie anyway because of it's high quality and the back-story for the main character.

Ryan Reynolds plays Deadpool; a quick-witted asshole assassin with a penchant for unrelenting vulgarity and violence.  There has been no better type-cast choice to date.  One of the most admirable things about the Deadpool movies is their adherence to character.  Whereas with most of the Marvel movies that have been taking the box office by storm for past two decades, Deadpool actually looks and acts like the character fans have been following in the comics.  Often it is hard to discern where Ryan Reynolds starts acting, because this character is so reminiscent of how we are used to seeing Reynolds.

The sequel begins with Deadpool as his life has taken shape after the first movie, so there will be minor spoilers if you haven't seen Deadpool (which I will reaffirm, do immediately).  Wade Wilson, a.k.a. Deadpool, lives with his girlfriend and is happy to fight crime on the side.  I don't want to give any spoilers for Deadpool 2 so I'll just say this; something really bad happens which leads Wilson into a downward spiral of depression.  His old friend Colossus tries to dig him out of it, but his actions lead to his incarceration in a Mutant prison of some sort.  Here he reluctantly befriends a young rebellious mutant named Fire Fist.  This is where the main plot starts, as we are introduced to a mysterious character from a dystopian future named Cable.  Cable comes after Fire Fist in an attempt to disrupt terrible events caused in the future.  Fire Fist breaks off because he becomes disenchanted with Deadpool, and Deadpool puts together a team to fight Cable and bring Fire Fist back to the good side.

That's the most I can do without giving too much away, and that's the gist of the plot.  So as for this movie; a perfect sequel.  If the idea of a sequel is to perfectly replicate the effect on the audience while giving some new direction...NAILED IT.  If you want to know if Deadpool 2  is right for you, watch Deadpool.  If you liked Deadpool, you will certainly like Deadpool 2.  They both are jam-packed with fourth wall breaks, vulgar hilarity and great action.  Though Deadpool 2 was a little heavy on the CGI for my taste, I still thoroughly enjoyed the action.  They are both great films and time well spent for those who enjoy the action/comedy genre as well as for Marvel fans (of a certain age).  Four out of five stars!

  1. Surprisingly, I liked this one almost as much as the first. I was pissed they killed off V, but did like the way they handled that.
